Q&A with Past TYMC Student: Emily Dickinson

Date

What you do…
I play keyboards/synth in the indie-pop band Paper Jackets. I also get hired for music videos, tv spots, and hired gun for tours.

Musical interests…
Everything!! Country – Classical – Pop – Rock – Soundtracks – and more. I always say, “If it’s good, it’s good.”

Musical accomplishments…
Too many to count. And who’s to say what’s your best if the sky’s the limit? After getting told ‘no’ or looked over so many times, every accomplishment big or small is validating. Everything from nailing that solo in a small intimate club of peers to playing on NBC’s The Voice is special in its own way.

Update on your current life…
Right now I’ve been doing a lot with my band. Playing shows, shooting music videos, brushing up songs in the studio, breaking into radio. It’s all really exciting!

Pointers on how to get foot in the door, like the heavily saturated Los Angeles?…
My number one suggestion is don’t give up. If this is truly what you want to do, don’t give up. You will be told ‘No’ a thousand times over. You will be intimidated. You will be hungry. Furthermore, play on stage as much as possible. There’s a few jams around town. Play, fall on your face, learn how to get up, and do it again. One of my mentors taught me this and it helped with my confidence on stage so much. I’d find things I wanted to work on and go home and study. Networking is also key… If it is meant to be I believe it will find you.

When did you get to Los Angeles…
I first moved to California at the age of 18. I’ve moved around since then, but as of 2015 I’ve found myself back here.

Goals for the future…
Being the soundtrack to special moments in your life. Being inspirational. Bringing joy. Bringing dance.
