Q&A with Past TYMC Student: Daniel Saufley

Date

Taking music lessons at the Tucson Youth Music Center was an important part of my musical journey, as TYMC is what started me on the path I am on now. Because the classes I was able to take gave me the opportunities to find myself and discovery who I am through music, and how it could be a part of my future life.

What you do…
I am trumpet performance major at the Fred Fox School of Music, University of Arizona, and a instrument repair technician at MetroGnome Music and Cycle-to-Go for the past five years.

Musical interests…

My musical interests primarily are in the art of mastering the trumpet and the orchestral repertoire for the trumpet. Throughout the years I have been playing the trumpet, I found that the process of learning and mastering new skills on the trumpet is the most rewarding and enjoyable experience. Being able to see my progress through the instruction from Ryan Darke (who truly is responsible for my success with the trumpet) practice and hard-work really motivates me to continue to punch forward on this life long journey of learning to master the trumpet. The orchestral repertoire is the most enjoyable type of music that I have found for me personally to play, as it is challenging in so many ways that help me to grow as a musician.

Musical accomplishments…

Some of the opportunities I have been blessed to have been a part of include, principal trumpet in the University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music Honor Band, and University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music Wind Symphony, principal trumpet in the Catalina Foothills Philharmonic Orchestra, and solo Cornet in the Arizona Symphonic Winds. I have also had the privilege to perform many well-known orchestral pieces in the Arizona Symphony Orchestra at the University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music, just to name a few, Mahler Symphony No. 4, Amy Beach Gaelic Symphony, Edward Elgar Enigma Variations.

Update on your current life…

In the Fall of 2019, I am starting my senior year at the University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music, and continue to work at MetroGnome Music as a repair technician.

Goals for the future…

Some of my future goals for my trumpet career are to serve my country through joining a military band, and then long term to eventually win a principal trumpet position in a major US Symphony.
